EDITOR: In today’s world of newsworthy stories we seldom take the time to reflect on the good memories from our past. Such is the case of attending New Hanover High School during the period of opening Hoggard High School, and the closing of Williston. There has been enough negativity surrounding that time, especially with all of the good that came from that era in our local lives.
Clifton “Papa Cool Breeze” Herring was one of those really good people from that time.
He was “Mike” of our age group. I’ve never seen anyone else with that much athletic ability in my life, but there was much more to this young man. He was the epitome of “cool”.
During all the trouble and fighting, Clifton kept his cool.
I think I can speak for our Class of 1970 in saying we all grieve in hearing of the loss of our friend, and we’ll miss him. Truly a Wilmington legend.

Editor’s note: Clifton “Pop” Herring, the former Laney High School basketball coach who coached Michael Jordan, died Dec. 11. He was 66. Herring attended New Hanover High School before playing football at N.C. Central. According to former New Hanover football head coach Glenn Sasser, Herring was the first black quarterback to play for the Wildcats.
Apples and oranges
EDITOR: A recent letter writer stated that were the president a Democrat and committed the same crimes as our current president, that the Democrats in the House and the Senate would be protecting him just like the Republicans are protecting Trump.
This is a provable falsehood. Democrats hold their party leaders accountable for their actions. To prove this one only has to look at our recent history. Al Franken was accused of sexual harassment, and was removed by his party in short order. Rep. Jim Jordan is accused of covering up numerous sexual assaults while he was a wrestling coach, yet he still holds his office. Another example would be the impeachment of President Clinton; it was a bi-partisan impeachment.
So this proves Democrats will do their duty regardless of party, where Republicans first rule is protect and obfuscate.

EDITOR: There has been much negative news recently about the commercial with the young woman on the exercise bicycle. Some have said that the commercial is sexist. Others ask why would a very thin young woman need to be on an exercise bicycle.
I can’t figure out what was sexist about it. Many people exercise not to lose weight but to strengthen their heart and bones. This is a marketing commercial plain and simple. More concern should be directed to the hundreds of absolutely stupid and embarrassing commercials on television and radio. I am grateful for my DVR which allows me to fast forward through idiocy.

Good trash talk
EDITOR: I relocated to Wilmington upon retiring from the Washington DC area and just wanted to say thank you and WOW to the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority. It was easy and efficient to sign up for the utilities in person and the staff was very welcoming. My trash containers were delivered the very day they stated and picked up for the first time today.
The crews were so quick and quiet that they were in and out before I could thank them for the enormous bulk pick up of moving boxes. Gosh, what a privilege to pay taxes AND get the service you only dream of in big cities.

At a time when so many letters to the editors are complaints, I wanted to say well done, Wilmington and CFPUA.
