MEDFORD, Ore. — After deliberating for no more than a couple of hours on Friday evening, a Jackson County jury found a Central Point woman guilty of murdering her husband following a trial that lasted several days.

64-year-old Louise Richards was arrested in 2017, accused of murdering her husband, 70-year-old Terry Richards. The murder trial began on Wednesday with jurors examining multiple pieces of evidence.

Louise has admitted that she killed Terry, but claims she did so following years of emotional abuse. As a result, the court asked the jury to determine whether or not Louise acted under “extreme emotional disturbance” (EED) based on the evidence presented at trial — a defense that could mitigate Richards’ sentence if accepted.

Richards got up on the witness stand and spoke in her own defense for more than four hours on Friday, between her testimony and cross-examination.

When the jury returned its verdict after 5:30 p.m. that evening, they found Richards guilty of murder with no EED, which will prolong her prison sentence. Terry Day Jersey Store
